Director Dettelbach, a 1991 graduate of Harvard Law School, was appointed by President Biden and sworn in as the head of the ATF in 2022. He began his career as a federal prosecutor in the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice and ultimately served as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio from 2009 to 2016. Thereafter, he was a partner at BakerHostetler.
Throughout Director Dettelbach's career, he has been honored with numerous awards including The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland's Louis Stokes Paragon Award, the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association's Pace Setter Diversity and Inclusion Award, the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Award for Public Service, and the Recovery Resources Exemplar Award for leading the multidisciplinary Heroin and Opioid Task Force.
